What do you do for
the last game of the season? Do you manage it any differently than any of
the other games of the season?
I like to do something different, out of the
ordinary, maybe offbeat. My motivation is to try to remove somewhat the
pressure and sadness of it being the last game of the season, and to give
the players some memory to laugh about years from now. Things I have done in
the past (some in combination):
- Have the players draw numbers from a
hat, and based on the order of the numbers, they get to pick their
positions.
- Have the players huddle together and
they determine their starting lineup and positions and the order of
substitutions.
- Give all of the players individual
objectives with a food snack reward for each player if they make their
objective. For example, each player has to perform a 360 dribble move at
some point in the game (or shoot with their "other good foot", etc.).
- Give the team an objective with a silly
consequence if they made the objective. For example, if the team took 10
shots on goal in each half, then the coaches would do a silly dance in
front of everyone at the end of the game. Everyone was counting out loud
by the middle of the second half.
- If, over the course of the season, the
players have gravitated to particular positions where they do well and
enjoy being there, then start the last game with the line up and positions
from the first game of the season.
In doing these
things, no disrespect is meant to the opposing team. I am curious to
know what you have tried or have thought about doing. Or whether you even
think this is a good idea. |
