Team Building Exercises
From the terrific book: Catch Them Being Good

by Tony Dicicco, Colleen Hacker, Charles Salzberg

Knock, Knock!

Objective: Bringing a team together (early) in non-threatening way

Have each team sit on the floor facing each other while two team leaders, coaches, etc stand in the middle holding up the blanket, sheet, et so that neither team can peek over, under or around the barrier to see the other team. Ask one player from each team to sit closer to the divider, stay seated and face the divider.

On the count of 4, both leaders drop the divider in one quick motion.

Both competitors facing each other can see on another and should shout, out loud, their opponent’s name.

Whoever shouts the correct opponent’s name first wins that round and the “loser” (whose name was called first) now switches over and joins the other team.

The game continues until one team has successfully captured everyone but one member of their opponent’s team.

Variation:

  • Same game but now the players call out their opponent’s last name.

  • Or each player could call out their opponent’s position on the team.

Debriefing:

  • Why is this important?

  • What does it accomplish?

  • What did you notice about your speed of thought when you got excited in the game or when you were competing?

  • How did this exercise help in getting to know your teammates?
