Defense rules in 0-0 tie

It was a soccer game filled with All-Stars, but the All-Stars couldn't find a way to put the ball in the back of the net.

The North out-shot the South, 31-10, but the game ended in a scoreless tie.

"I felt we dominated the game," said Trey Gregory of Oak Mountain, who was the North's Most Valuable Player. "They had one good chance to maybe our 10.

"We couldn't stick it in the back of the net."

With 26 minutes left in the second half, the North's Andre Wright from Butler scored a goal, but it was nullified by an offside penalty. Another North scoring opportunity was stuffed by the South defense six minutes later.

With 18 minutes left, Chelsea's Scott Shelton found a seam in the defense, but his shot bounced off the left post. Minutes later, successive corner kicks were batted away by the South defense.

The South's Jorge Delgado of Davidson had a chance with three minutes left, but his shot hit the crossbar.

Players attributed the missed opportunities to one thing - bad luck.

"It was really tough luck," Gregory said. "It's challenging when we play as well as we do but can't put it together."

While the South capitalized on its defensive chances, North players were proud of their own defense, which held the South to only four shots in the second half.

"I was very impressed by our defense," North forward Andrew Riley of Oak Mountain said. "When you put 17 or 18 guys together in a short period of time and we're that organized, it says a lot about how smart and athletic we were."

The first half was uneventful except for yellow cards by the North's Daniel Segewitz of Grissom and the South's Harris Haynes of Benjamin Russell. The North attempted 11 shots in the half, but could not convert. North goalkeeper Hal Halbert of Vestavia Hills recorded three saves in the half. Oak Mountain's Jay Dalton Huey recorded two saves in the second half.

The South's Tyler Rosser of Montgomery Academy picked up a yellow card late in the second half.

This continued the trend for low-scoring games by the boys. This game marked the fourth shutout in five games, with three of those being 1-0 games.

David Shelley, a goalkeeper from Trinity Presbyterian, picked up MVP honors for the South squad. Shelley had eight saves on the night.

Boys in draw; North girls win

Officials decide against OT in boys all-star prep soccer; North girls edge South 3-2

MONTGOMERY -- The North and South all-star boys soccer teams couldn't settle their differences in 80 minutes Tuesday night at the YMCA Soccer Complex, so the referees decided to call it a draw.

The decision was made not to play an overtime period or a shootout, leaving the North and South with a 0-0 tie.

"To begin with, they said we were going to play two 5-minute, sudden-victory overtimes but then they said no, we're going to call it," South coach Walter Milne of Mary Montgomery said. "So I said, 'OK.' I'm tired anyway.

"I'm glad it came out the way it did. They played hard and they both deserved to win."

South goalkeeper David Shelley of Trinity was named the South's MVP after making eight saves, several of which were spectacular. Oak Mountain's Trey Gregory was the North MVP.

"He's phenomenal. That's the only way to describe David Shelley," Milne said.

Shelley got plenty of help from his defense; at one point in the first half, Prattville defender Tyler Woodham blocked three straight shots in front of the South goal.

Butler's Andre Wright rocketed a shot off Shelley's hands and into the goal late in the first half but the score was waved off on an offsides call.

"Most of our players saw it was offsides and let up," Milne said, "and that's really how the goal got scored."

The North missed another first-half opportunity when a shot by Chelsea's Scott Shelton hit the post.

"I thought we outplayed them," North coach Mike Pettey of Sparkman said.

Davidson's Jorge Delgado nearly won the game for the South late in the second half but his hard shot careened off the crossbar.

sub-- North 3, South 2 (girls)Bob Jones' Elise Denton scored two early goals and the North held on as the South played a furious second half, winning 3-2 in the girls all-star soccer contest.

The South got second-half goals from Houston Academy's Amy VandeLune and Benjamin Russell's Patricia George to fight its way back into the game but missed out on several other opportunities, including a first-half penalty kick by Montgomery Academy's Sarah Crosby that went off the post.

"I think she got overexcited ... and hit the post, like we did four or five times tonight," said South coach Sally McNider of UMS-Wright. "I think we came out flat the first half. But we fought back. I think we outplayed them in the second half.

"If we'd had another five minutes, you'd have seen another goal."

VandeLune's goal came off a nice crossing pass from Montgomery Academy's Mary Buss and cut the lead to 2-1. But a shot by Bayside Academy's Sara Senkbeil bounced off the post and another Senkbeil shot sailed wide minutes later.

Vestavia Hills' Paula Radmard scored what would ultimately be the game-winning goal with about 12 minutes to play, firing the ball past Robertsdale goalkeeper Melissa Andress, who came off the line to cut off the angle.

"From the first half, they knew I would come out (of the goal)," Andress said. "She was coming up so fast, I thought I could get it but she saw me coming and she shot."

Andress, the South's MVP, kept the South close, however, making tough saves on hard shots by Huntsville's Sarah Marek and Bob Jones' Erin Turner. George scored late in the game to cut the North lead to 3-2 but the South couldn't get the equalizer.

"She saved us," McNider said of Andress. "She was solid for us and that's what kept us in the game tonight."

Denton, who scored her goals off assists from Turner and Homewood's Jana McClung, was named the North MVP.

"We came out strong," said North coach Brad Carwile of East Limestone. "We played with good chemistry. It kind of surprised me because with only two practices, you really can't get much done. The South is getting a lot better."
