Dworsky, McIntyre Players of the Year

Wednesday, June 16, 2004
DAN WILLIAMS
News staff writer

In soccer, great goal-scorers usually possess an assortment of physical gifts that allow them to beat defenders and find the back of the net with regularity.

Many of those skills can be developed, but speed is innate. Both senior Anne McIntyre of Oak Mountain High School and sophomore Bill Dworsky of Randolph High School are blessed with great speed, and it's one of the reasons they usually dominated high school soccer players this past year.

McIntyre, who scored 33 goals and added 13 assists for the season, has been named The Birmingham News' girls state soccer player of the year. Dworsky, who had 50 goals and 14 assists, is The News' boys state soccer player of the year.

Kris Keplinger of Shades Valley is The News' boys state soccer coach of the year, because he took the Mounties to the Class 6A state title even though they lost their starting goalie to injury just before the playoffs. Henry Mpagi of Huntsville, who led the Panthers to a 24-1-1 record and the 5A state title, is the state girls coach of the year.

They headline The News' Super All-State and All-State soccer teams announced today. Selections were made by the newspaper's prep sports staff, including nominations by state coaches.

For McIntyre, who was also named The News' girls metro player of the year, her speed and her love for soccer became apparent at an early age. At times, she may have even been overzealous.

"When I was little, I would run all over the field. I would take other people's positions," McIntyre recalled.

McIntyre's speed caught the eye of Oak Mountain coach Chris Wilson from the moment she joined the varsity as an eighth-grader. "She was always an offensive threat," Wilson said. "She was someone that other teams had to look to mark from the moment she stepped in."

McIntyre went on to score 135 career goals for the Eagles, and she is the school's career leader in that category. She has signed a scholarship to play at Birmingham-Southern.

The one thing McIntyre didn't accomplish while in high school was winning a state championship. The Eagles had their hearts broken in the 6A state final each of the past two seasons. This past year, Oak Mountain was 26-0 going into the state championship game against Spain Park, but the Jaguars came from behind to beat the Eagles 3-2.

"I give (Spain Park) so much credit for the effort they put in that game," McIntyre said. "On any given day, any given team can beat anybody. You can never be overconfident, and you can never be under-confident."

McIntyre was selected as the state girls player of the year ahead of Sarah Marek of Huntsville, Summer Ragsdale of Spain Park and Mallory Debter of Fort Payne.

(Update on Anne McIntyre - May 2005 - 4 times Birmingham News All-State (3 times 1st team), 132 career goals, 66 assists, NSCAA All American 2003 and State player of the year, Lakeshore All-Tournament 2002 offensive MVP, 2003 all-tournament, 2004 MVP, state tournament MVP 2003, North-South All-Star 2003 - Oak Mountain Girls Final 4 all 4 years - 5A semis in 2001 & 2002, 6A finals in 2003 & 2004.
College - Attends Birmingham Southern.  Birmingham Southern did won Big South Freshman year and she won conference freshman of the year made the Soccer Buzz Division 1 Southeast region All-Freshman team.)

Though just a sophomore this past year, Dworsky is considered a soccer phenom by many coaches. He has 102 goals for his career already.

"He has all the qualities," Randolph coach Richard Todd said. "He has the ability to change gears on you with the ball at his feet, almost as if it's tied to his shoelace."

Dworsky led Randolph to the 4A-1A Final Four this year. In his team's semifinal loss to Trinity, Dworsky barely played due to injury.

He is a member of the Region 3 Olympic Development team, and Todd said colleges with traditionally strong soccer programs are already calling. "I think he's on the verge of doing something real special," Todd said.

Dworksy was picked for the state award over Ben Bludsworth of Briarwood, who was named boys metro player of the year, Bradley Phillips of Vestavia Hills and Jason Sabio of Grissom.

Keplinger won his second state title with Shades Valley this season. The Mounties finished the year 21-4-5.

The most impressive aspect of Shades Valley's playoff run was that the team's starting goalie, senior Tyler Zinder, was injured just before the playoffs started. When Zinder was injured, "it was almost like they looked at each other and just said, `hey, we've got to pick it up now,'" said Keplinger, who is also The News' metro boys coach of the year.

The Mounties outscored their four opponents 13-4 in the state tournament, including a 1-0 win in the final against Vestavia Hills.

"The thing that really separated this team was our best players were our hardest workers," the coach said. "A lot of teams don't have that."

Keplinger was chosen for the honor ahead of Dann Cleveland of Trinity, Rick Grammer of Vestavia Hills and Bob Vayda of Grissom.

Mpagi's Huntsville squad lost just one game all season - to Oak Mountain - and it did not give up a goal in the state playoffs. The Panthers outscored opponents 18-0 in four games, including a 1-0 win against Fort Payne in the final.

Mpagi was selected state coach of the year ahead of Robert Starr of Spain Park, Sean Gibson of Altamont and Oak Mountain's Wilson. Starr is The News' metro girls coach of the year.
