Parents and Players,
I wanted to try to provide a little solace about the
loss to South
Alabama Select (aka Dothan or Alabama United) at State Cup by reminding
the players of a bit of recent history.
Here are some of their
accomplishments over the past two years. In two state cups they've scored 30 goals and
given up only 2 goals. They were the youngest (age-wise) U16 team in the
state league in 2003 and one of the the youngest U17 teams in 2004. They accumulated
far, far fewer cards (red or yellow) than any other team in the state
league in both 2003 and 2004.
Here's a list of some of the awards the Decatur United
'88 team has
won over the past two seasons:
2005 Emerald Coast Cup (Destin) Tournament Champions
2004 Alabama Division II State Cup Finalists
2004 Memphis Champions Cup Finalists
2004 Knoxville Smoky Mountain Fall Classic Finalists
2004 Alabama Sports Festival Champions
2004 Alabama Representative to Region III Director's Cup
2004 Wolf River Classic Semi-finalists
2003 Alabama Division II State Champions
2003 Regular State League U16 D2 Champions
2003 U-16 Finalists Kicks Invitational Tournament
That's quite a feat for a team that got crushed
badly in its first
two 2003 tournaments - losing by an average score of 6-1 in its first
six
tournament games. Not bad for a team who had many players who had been
playing rec soccer. Not bad for an area of the state not known for
soccer - where the soccer experts said older players would have to
travel to Huntsville or Birmingham in order to play competitive soccer.
Thanks for a great experience.
Ken & Mike
